To determine if a written time is an hour in the morning or in the evening AM and PM are used. In most European countries there is a 24-hour written time used where 0 to 12 hours is in the morning and 13-24 is in the afternoon/at night. AM stands in short for Ante Meridiem, de Latin name for “Before Midday” or “Before Noon”. An example: 10.00 a.m. is 10 o'clock in the morning. With a 24-hour time, this is 10:00. Whereas, PM stands short for Post Meridiem, de Latin name for “After Midday” or “After Noon”. An example: 10.00 p.m. is 10 o'clock in the evening. With a 24-hour time, this is 22:00.

Convert 12-hour format to 24-hour formate

Hours are numbered from 0 to 24, with no am or pm designation. Example: At 11:00 PM, 23 hours have passed since the beginning of the current day.
To convert AM or PM times to 24-hour format, use the following rules:
  • 12 hours from midnight to 00:59 are subtracted, 0:49 AM = 0:49 (12:49 – 12). Do nothing from 1 am to 12 pm. 11:49 AM = 11:49 AM. Do nothing from 12:01 pm to 12:59 pm. 12:49 PM = 12:49 PM.
  • Add 12 hours from 1:00 PM to midnight. 1:49 pm = 1:49 pm (1:49 + 12)
  •  To convert 24-hour time to 12-hour time: From 0:00 (midnight) to 0:59 add 12 hours and use AM 0:49 = 00:49 (0:49 + 12) From 1:00 to 11:59 just add am after the time. 11:49 = 11:49 am From 12:00 to 12:59 just add pm after the hour. 12:49 PM = 12:49 PM From 13:00 to 00:00, use pm minus 12 hours. 1:49 PM = 1:49 PM (1:49 PM - 12:00 PM).
The 12-hour clock is the primary written and phonetic time system in some countries, especially those that were part of the former British Empire. The United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the United States, Canada (excluding Quebec), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Pakistan,  Bangladesh, etc., as well as the former United States, Mexico, the Philippines, are subject to this Convention. However, in most countries,  the standard system used, especially in writing, is the 24-hour clock. Some countries in Europe and Latin America use a combination of both, preferring to use the 12-hour clock in colloquial language, but the 24-hour clock in written and formal contexts.
