A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela issued notice to Jamia Millia Islamia and University Grants Commission (UGC) on the PIL by Satyam Singh, a law graduate.
Referring to the UGC guidelines, Singh said Jamia couldn't restrict free coaching only to female students and those from SC/ST and minority communities as it was under the obligation to extend the benefit to both OBC (non-creamy layer) and economically weaker sections (EWS).
Earlier, Jamia Millia Islamia had announced to expand its academic offerings by introducing three new departments. These three departments include the Department of Law under the Faculty of Law, the Department of Dental Sciences, and the Department of Medical Sciences under the Faculty of Dentistry.
The college said that the expansion represents a significant development for Jamia Millia Islamia and provides new opportunities for students to pursue academic careers in law, dentistry, and medicine. It is expected to further strengthen the university's reputation as a leading education and research center in India.
